Pearly days

We are in the midst of at least two weeks of glorious weather in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Sunny, pleasantly warm, highs in the 70s and low 80s--a string of ideal late-September pearls.

This is the kind of day that inspires hope for a long, mild, blazing-orange autumn. The kind of day that starts us planning a long drive in the countryside to admire the fall colors--which will be a little late this year, we're told. The kind of day that makes us think maybe this year we'll get the whole garden properly put to bed before the ground freezes. The kind of day that prompts me to make another batch of iced tea and to put off thoughts of making soup, or chili.

Things don't look spectacular--summer flowers are about gone, greenery is turning brown, fall colors, as I mentioned, will be late. But sunshine and warmth are everything. Sleeping with the windows wide open? Amazing. Sitting here at the computer with summer-like breezes wafting in? Totally seductive.

In fact, something about this better-than-seasonable weather has made me put aside most of my to-do list and just soak it in. We have picked up the kids after school a couple of times each week and sat at the playground while they run and climb and laugh, and each time we think, "This could be the last time they go barefoot this season." We sip iced tea in the garden and think, "This could be the end of tee-shirt weather."

So that's the other side of the conflict that takes place in the mind of a Minnesotan. Enjoy today, because tomorrow will be cold and horrible. Or maybe, just maybe, this lovely weather will last a while.

In any case I've been enjoying it, and my to-do list has come up a bit short. Which is my excuse for not posting in almost three weeks. Some people get spring fever; I think I have fall fever.

Oh, and my computer malfunctioned last week and had to be repaired. I just realized I can't post any pictures until I move my files around again. So I'm limited to words for a while.

I hope whatever season you're in is an enjoyable one.

Do we live on the same planet? Yesterday, Seattle got more rain in one day in September than any time in HISTORY. And tonight we're expecting a rain and wind storm.

Lucky you, Minnesota!

I know, we seem to be especially lucky this year.

I'm glad you're enjoying the season. Here in Oregon we're having extremely heavy wind and rain. Trees are starting to fall in neighborhoods but we'll all get by. Take care.

I am jealous of your beautiful weather while we listen to the rain hammering overhead. But the nice weather will return, while Minnesota will resume its march towards winter. Your words were filled with pictures, even without the visual kind. :-)

I'm so glad you're taking a break and enjoying every moment. It is lovely here in Holland this year and I've just put to bed my summer blog book, Holland Summer. Gorgeous flowers this year with all the sunny days. Unusual for here. Enno and I are closing the garden, too. We want it completely winterized before we leave for Texas in November. It makes a big difference in the spring when we return. xo Jenny

I love your title: Pearly Days. And I love that you're just enjoying it as job one. Our September has been lovely as well- warm, sunny days and slightly cooler nights- perfect really. Part of graceful aging is to savor the gifts we're given with grateful hearts. I'll think of us doing that together in such different places.

You Minnesotans deserve this wonderful spell of Indian Summer! My sister, who lives in Minneapolis, just posted some pictures from Afton -- overlooking the St. Croix -- exquisite!

Hey Nancy! Yes, your winter cometh. And I know from my dear friend Pearl that when it comes, the Minnesotan comes not single spies but in battalions! Enjoy it while you can =) Indigo x

I have been savoring this beautiful September, too, as you probably know from my blog. Our Michigan winters might not be quite as rough as yours, but they are close! So, I find fall a bit bittersweet in so many ways, and I love the fact that this fall bush bears that name!

Fall fever..yes that is a perfect way to describe it! I am not sure the colors are going to be fantastic like the DNR says, there is some color but certainly not like some years...at least not in this area of Minnesota. Maybe like you said Fall is late! I love warmish fall days too, we are waiting for all the leaves to fall to do yard work:)

In answer to Linda's question about do we live on the same planet -- obviously not! It was 82 here today and it is supposed to be 90 by Saturday! But fortunately -- I love sunshine!

It has been a glorious week here indeed. And especially so since our son and grands arrived from Phoenix. We've been doing hikes, sightseeing and took in the Minn. Zoo yesterday. I naturally proposed Como but was outvoted 5 to one based on their "google" research...:)

Enjoy every BLessed moment. It's hot and sunny here in my part of California, but you can feel autumn in the air trying to nudge summer out of the way. I'm tearing out the last of my tomatoes and planting the broccoli. Wish we had the fall colors that you do. The hillsides are brown now, but with winter rains they will turn a bright green and that's about all the color change we get. Enjoy your iced tea. I'm having some iced coffee right now. Cheers!

I have so enjoyed the waning days of summer/fall. I like how you described them as seductive. We had cold weather last night. I had to get out the down comforters. I guess the fall season has shifted into a cold snap in our part of the country.

There is something about the extra days of sunshine that makes them more delicious than summer days. I love this post, and the feeling of enjoyment you're so clearly reveling in here. To-do lists can wait.
