Mad dogs and Englishmen

I’m enjoying the display put on by the phlox in my garden and decided to share some more photos.

Meanwhile, we’ve been planning lots of activities for the two weeks the grandkids are with us for daycare before they start school. That time is here…and so is the heat. And humidity. And we all know “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity,” right?

Both kids will be with us this week, and Vi next week. They need activity out of doors, but it’s mostly going to be in the mornings, before the temps reach 100 and the heat index goes higher than that. After all, as Noel Coward said, “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” The rest of us, at least here in Minnesota, are delicate flowers who wilt easily and drop our petals.

So instead of heading to the State Fair right away on Monday, we’ll hold off until Wednesday or Thursday, when the highs should only be around 90. We’ll visit Hidden Falls Park on the Mississippi River one day, and go indoors to the Maya exhibit at the Science Museum one day. We have a couple of other surprises in mind, plus our usual trip to China Restaurant, where the kids devour steamed dumplings and lo mein and we order enough to bring home leftovers.

Even with all that, we’ll have lots of time just to play here at home. The kids will be happy to be reunited with their toys, and Peter and I will be happy for our air conditioning, even as we hate its effect on the environment.

I’m going to experiment with recording these activities using the Camera+ app for my iPhone, which I learned about from my blog friend DJan, I’ve been complaining about the quality of my iPhone photos, and this app seems to address many of the problems. I’ll let you see what I learn.

I notice that I once wrote about the finality that the end of August brings. At this moment, I don’t seem to mind the coming transition to September and autumn. How about you?

Beautiful pictures. Fall is my favorite season but I could use a few warm and sunny days before summer ends.

My favorite time of year is fall. I'm hoping for a long one... :)

Well, our summer has been mild with only two days reaching 80 degrees here in Bellingham. It's sometimes hotter in the mountains at altitude, but I think this has been the best summer so far of the five I've experienced here. I'm sure hoping you have a wonderful day and.... thanks for the shout out. I'm enjoying the app, too! :-)

Your photos are really nice! I love phlox. I miss the ones I grew in my yard before we moved so much. I had the same pink and white in my yard. I drove by the house the other day to see them in bloom. Big mistake. The heartstrings were pulled very tight. I know the deer would munch them here, so I didn't even think of planting them. Thanks for letting me enjoy yours.

Hey Nancy! Nope, I'm in no mood for Autumn; I already feel like I've overslept and missed Spring. But I'm glad you're sorting the camera phone problems; you take nice piccies, so MORE PLEASE! Indigo x

I love fall, but I am never ready for summer to end. My grandkids will all be back in school as of today and that feels like the end of summer, even with temps near 90. It sounds like you have lots of end of summer fun planned with the kids.

Phlox are so lovely and yours especially so!

And I'm of mixed feelings on the summer to fall transition. Love fall. Love Summer. But winter -- too close behind!

Your photos are beautiful - if those are from your iPhone they are amazing! Living in southern California we don't really have fall and it is the one thing I miss -- a little bit. But not enough to go back to living in climates that have fall and winter! School starts for our granddaughter tomorrow and the school year has again become how I measure time.

Anything that brings down the temperature is good with me!

Your Tall Garden Phlox are beautiful! Such calming colors. I hope it cools off for some of your adventures. It has been a miserable week so far. Those cooler temperatures earlier in the month spoiled us! I am looking forward to October but only because I will be off work then..I am hoping for a long Fall:)

Lovely flowers in your garden. I know what you mean, Summer's end is bittersweet. We've had a particularly mild August in the northeast and I've really enjoyed it after a hot, muggy, rainy July.

Beautiful flowers. Please come do my house - no flowers at all here, just shrubs.

Beautiful pictures and words. I'm actually ready for the rains this year, but it's because summer was so completely summer it felt like enough. That doesn't happen often here.

Beautiful. I do love phlox and am trying to nurture the wild prairie kinds that seem much less susceptible to the blight...

I like the changing of the season but the winter darkness is so dreadful for me that when fall starts in I have to force myself not to think ahead.

Otherwise, I love this time of year, when the light is longer but the sun is still shining most of the time.
