A funny thing happened on the way to the movie

We love old Fred Astaire movies. A few days ago Peter said, only half-joking, "We should watch Royal Wedding in the next week."

Knowing that there has already been a lot of William-and-Kate programming on US television, I said I was sure that one of the channels was enterprising enough to schedule it. So he checked the online guide, and sure enough, there it was. "Royal Wedding," starring Fred Astaire and Jane Powell, was listed on our public television channel Saturday, April 23, and Friday, April 29.

So on Saturday, I was surprised when I couldn't find it in the newspaper listings. I mentioned this to Peter, who rechecked the online guide. Aha! The listing now read "William and Kate: The Royal Wedding." We watched CSI: Miami instead.

It's not that I hate the royals. After all, we have a princess in the family. That would be ViMae, who at nearly three loves princesses, ballerinas, and fairies. She came in the other day declaring herself a princess and her brother a prince. "The princess wants to dance now," she said, by way of asking for help turning on the music.

I mentioned to her that a princess was about to marry a prince (not technically correct since she's a commoner, but that's beside the point); the wedding would be next week. Without missing a beat, ViMae said, "I can wear this dress!"

I plan to watch some coverage of the wedding. With any luck, the schedule will work out that ViiMae can watch a bit of it with me. And then we'll get a copy of Royal Wedding the move and watch Fred dance on the ceiling.

I love her instant optimism that she would go to the ceremony. It's such a fun phase. I wonder what she'll think to see the real thing? Keep us posted. Bouna Pasqua!

Smart girl, that ViMae, knowing right away what she is going to wear. I hope she doesn't start asking for her own horse drawn carriage after seeing the wedding :)

I remember when Diana and Charles married. I set my alarm to wake me up so I could watch it live. Other than seeing Kate's dress, I'm not as interested in this one, but I may watch it when it's rescheduled at a more convenient time.

I love your granddaughter's response.

I'm likely to watch only snippets and then only as reruns, but I too love her optimism. That is such a worthwhile quality and sets the stage for everything else.

I love that she knew instantly that she had the perfect dress for a royal wedding. Hope you do get to watch the ceremony with your own princess.

How perfect! You are surrounded by royalty, and ViMae knows she is one! Of course she is, and I also will watch the reruns and oooh and aaaah over the dress, thinking back about when I watched Diana and Charles. Blessings to you on Easter Sunday!

Your granddaughter is so cute. I love her response.

My oldest daughter and I got up early to watch Diana and Charles. We've talked about watching this wedding together, she, her daughter who is 12, and I, through skype.

Happy Easter!

Isn't it lovely that, in this time, we're thinking about watching a wedding we hope will be a fairy tale?

I once read a quote that said everyone should walk around as though wearing an invisible crown. ViMae already knows she is wearing one and how wonderful that is!

I love Fred Astaire. If you google Putting on the Ritz and Fred, you can watch him do that dance. Very fun.

The world is awaiting for Royal wedding after so many years a marriage is in the royal family i hope both of them will live happily life along together with some one or two children so let us wish they will be the best couple of the world for the year of 2011 after this wedding she will also prove herself a kind hearted woman as like as Princes Diana and also participate in so many social activities.

I really enjoy the complementary images of the royal couples. Your movie recommendation sounds perfect. My wife and I are getting up at 5:30 tomorrow morning. There should be a lot of interesting pomp and tradition to behold.

I would kind of prefer to watch Royal Wedding than Royal Wedding: William and Kate. I have been watching Boris Karloff's "Thriller" show on Netlfix and I do not miss cable AT ALL. I think Princess ViMae is on the right track. I hope she has a tiara, too, because every princess needs one. Maybe we can get her one with sapphires in keeping with the Buckingham crowd!
